The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a small, ear-shaped structure that projects from the left atrium of the heart. It is a common site for thrombus formation, which can lead to embolic events such as stroke. Left atrial appendage exclusion (LAAE) is a procedure that involves closing off the LAA to prevent thrombus formation.

There are two main approaches to LAAE:

  1. Surgical LAAE
  2. Percutaneous LAAE

Surgical LAAE

Surgical LAAE is performed during open heart surgery. The surgeon will make an incision in the left atrium and suture the LAA closed. This is a relatively simple procedure, but it requires open heart surgery, which carries some risks.

Percutaneous LAAE

Percutaneous LAAE is a less invasive procedure that can be performed without open heart surgery. The doctor will insert a catheter into a vein in the leg and guide it to the heart. The catheter will then be used to deliver a device that will close off the LAA. There are several different types of percutaneous LAAE devices available, and the type of device used will depend on the patient's individual anatomy.

Benefits of LAAE

LAAE can reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). AFib is a heart rhythm disFree Download that can cause blood to pool in the LAA, leading to thrombus formation. LAAE can also reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have had a heart attack.

Risks of LAAE

LAAE is a relatively safe procedure, but there are some risks associated with it. These risks include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Stroke
  • Device-related complications

The risks of LAAE are generally low, but they should be discussed with a doctor before the procedure.

LAAE is a safe and effective procedure for reducing the risk of stroke in patients with AFib or who have had a heart attack. The procedure can be performed surgically or percutaneously, and the type of procedure used will depend on the patient's individual anatomy. The risks of LAAE are generally low, but they should be discussed with a doctor before the procedure.
