In 1919, Sándor Ferenczi underwent a psychoanalysis with Sigmund Freud. The analysis lasted for three years and was considered by both men to be a success. However, the relationship between Ferenczi and Freud was complex and often stormy. After the analysis ended, Ferenczi continued to develop his own ideas about psychoanalysis, which often diverged from Freud's. In 1933, Ferenczi published a book called "Thalassa: A Theory of Genitality," in which he outlined his own unique approach to psychoanalysis.

Ferenczi's book was controversial and met with a mixed reception from the psychoanalytic community. Some analysts praised Ferenczi for his originality and his willingness to challenge Freud's ideas. Others, however, criticized Ferenczi for straying too far from Freud's orthodoxy. Despite the controversy, Ferenczi's book remains an important and influential work in the history of psychoanalysis.
