In his new book, Wings of Deceit, journalist Peter Robison tells the inside story of how a small group of pilots and whistleblowers fought against Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to expose the deadly flaws in the 737 MAX.
The Design Flaws of the 737 MAX
The 737 MAX was a new version of Boeing's popular 737 airliner. It was designed to be more fuel-efficient than its predecessors, but it had a number of design flaws that would ultimately lead to disaster.
One of the most significant flaws was the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). MCAS was a software system designed to prevent the 737 MAX from stalling. However, MCAS was flawed and could activate even when the plane was not in danger of stalling.
When MCAS activated, it would force the nose of the plane down. This could make it impossible for the pilots to control the plane and could lead to a crash.
The Cover-Up
Boeing was aware of the flaws in the 737 MAX, but the company did not disclose them to pilots or the FAA. Boeing also pressured the FAA to approve the 737 MAX for flight without properly testing the MCAS system.
The FAA, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of aircraft in the United States, failed to properly oversee Boeing and the 737 MAX. The FAA allowed the 737 MAX to be certified for flight without conducting adequate testing.
The Crashes
On October 29, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, Indonesia. All 189 people on board were killed.
On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All 157 people on board were killed.
Both crashes were caused by the MCAS system. In both cases, MCAS activated and forced the nose of the plane down. The pilots were unable to regain control of the planes and they crashed.
The Aftermath
The crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 led to a worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX. Boeing was forced to redesign the MCAS system and the FAA was forced to implement new safety measures.
The crashes also led to a public outcry over the safety of Boeing aircraft. Boeing's reputation was damaged and the company faced numerous lawsuits.
The Pilots Who Fought Back
The pilots who fought to stop the 737 MAX disaster are heroes. They spoke out about the flaws in the plane and they refused to fly it. They put their careers and their lives on the line to protect the public.
In his book, Wings of Deceit, Peter Robison tells the story of these pilots. He shows how they fought against Boeing and the FAA to expose the truth about the 737 MAX.
The story of the Boeing 737 MAX disaster is a tragedy. It is a story of corporate greed and government failure. But it is also a story of heroism. The pilots who fought to stop the disaster are heroes. They saved countless lives and they deserve our thanks.
