A Review of 'The Listener' by Lemn Sissay
Lemn Sissay is a British-Ethiopian poet, playwright, performer, and broadcaster. He is the author of several books of poetry, including 'The Fire People' and 'My Name is Why.' Sissay's work has been praised for its honesty, humor, and insight into the human condition. In 'The Listener,' Sissay explores themes of identity, belonging, and the power of words.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section, 'The Fire People,' is a series of poems that explore Sissay's experiences as a black man in Britain. The poems are raw and honest, and they offer a powerful indictment of racism and discrimination. In the second section, 'My Name is Why,' Sissay explores his own identity and sense of belonging. The poems in this section are more personal and introspective, and they offer a glimpse into Sissay's inner world. The third section, 'The Listener,' is a series of poems that explore the power of words. Sissay argues that words can be used to heal, to inspire, and to change the world.
The Listener is a powerful and moving collection of poems. Sissay's writing is honest, insightful, and often humorous. He is a gifted poet with a unique voice, and his work is sure to stay with you long after you finish reading it.
