Margaret Corbin was an American patriot who fought in the Revolutionary War. She was the first woman to receive a military pension from the United States government.

Corbin was born in Pennsylvania in 1751. She was the daughter of a farmer and a homemaker. Corbin received little formal education, but she was a bright and curious child. She loved to read and learn about the world around her.

When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, Corbin was eager to do her part for her country. She joined the Continental Army and served as a camp follower. Camp followers were women who provided food, clothing, and other supplies to the soldiers.

In 1777, Corbin's husband was killed in battle. Corbin was devastated by his death, but she did not give up. She continued to serve as a camp follower, and she even took on some of her husband's duties.

In 1779, Corbin was at the Battle of Fort Mercer in New Jersey. During the battle, she saw her husband's former commanding officer, Captain John Hazelwood, fall in battle. Corbin took over Hazelwood's cannon and began firing on the enemy.

Corbin fired the cannon for hours, even though she was under heavy fire. She was eventually wounded in the leg and arm, but she refused to give up. She continued to fire the cannon until she was Free Downloaded to retreat.

Corbin's bravery and determination inspired the other soldiers. They rallied and eventually won the battle. Corbin's actions earned her the respect of her fellow soldiers and the admiration of the American people.

After the war, Corbin was awarded a military pension by the United States government. She was the first woman to receive such a pension.

Corbin's story is an inspiring example of courage, determination, and patriotism. She was a true American hero who defied the odds and made her mark on history.

Legacy

Margaret Corbin's legacy lives on today. She is remembered as one of the most courageous women in American history. Her story has been told in books, articles, and films. She has also been honored with a statue in her hometown of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Corbin's story is a reminder that women have always played a vital role in the military. She is an inspiration to women and men alike, and her story continues to inspire people today.
