Early Life and Education

Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933. Her mother, Celia, a first-generation American, instilled in her daughter a deep sense of justice and the importance of education. Ginsburg excelled academically, graduating from Cornell University and Columbia Law School, where she was one of only nine women in her class.

Legal Career

After graduating from law school, Ginsburg held several prestigious clerkships and taught law at Rutgers University and Columbia University. In the 1970s, she co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),where she litigated several landmark cases that challenged gender discrimination.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where she served for 13 years. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Ginsburg to the Supreme Court, making her the second woman to serve on the nation's highest court.

Supreme Court Justice

As a Supreme Court justice, Ginsburg authored or co-authored numerous influential opinions that advanced the cause of gender equality. She was a strong advocate for the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and dissented passionately against decisions that she believed undermined women's rights.

Ginsburg's most famous opinion came in the 1996 case of United States v. Virginia, in which the Court struck down a male-only admissions policy at Virginia Military Institute. Ginsburg's eloquent dissent in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (2007) called for overturning a precedent that made it difficult for plaintiffs to prove pay discrimination.

Legacy

Ruth Bader Ginsburg died in 2020, but her legacy continues to inspire generations. She was a tireless advocate for justice and equality, and her unwavering pursuit of these ideals has had a profound impact on American society.

Ginsburg's legacy is not limited to her legal accomplishments. She was also a cultural icon, known for her sharp wit, her love of opera, and her signature "dissent collars." Her life and work have inspired countless people to challenge injustice and fight for a more just and equal world.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a true American hero. Her unwavering pursuit of justice and equality has left an indelible mark on our nation. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
