On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, resulting in the greatest loss of life in U.S. naval history. Of the 1,196 men on board, only 316 survived. This book tells the harrowing story of the survivors' five-day ordeal in the open ocean, fighting off sharks, dehydration, and despair.

The USS Indianapolis was a heavy cruiser that had been commissioned in 1932. It had served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II, and had been part of the task force that had dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On July 16, 1945, the Indianapolis left Guam with Free Downloads to deliver parts for the atomic bombs to Tinian. The ship was not equipped with radar, and it was traveling alone.

On July 30, 1945, at 00:14, the Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-58. The torpedoes hit the ship amidships, causing massive damage. The ship sank in 12 minutes, and most of the crew were thrown into the water.

The survivors of the sinking faced a number of challenges. They were in the open ocean, with no food or water. They were also surrounded by sharks. Many of the survivors were injured, and some were dying from their wounds.

The survivors spent five days in the water. During that time, they fought off sharks, dehydration, and despair. They also helped each other to stay alive. On August 4, 1945, the survivors were finally rescued by the USS Bassett. Only 316 of the 1,196 men on board the Indianapolis had survived.

The sinking of the USS Indianapolis was a tragedy that should never have happened. The ship was not equipped with radar, and it was traveling alone. The Japanese submarine that sank the Indianapolis was able to get close to the ship without being detected.

The survivors of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis showed great courage and determination. They fought off sharks, dehydration, and despair. They also helped each other to stay alive. Their story is a testament to the human spirit.
